Advanced Thermal Tactics

We Don't Just Teach!

Our workshops bridge complex thermal science with split-second tactical decisions, enabling participants to manage intense situations effectively. We provide in-depth training on reading flow paths and identifying thermal signatures using advanced techniques, enriched with real-world firefighting information and experiences. Join us to develop your skills and deepen your understanding of fire behavior and thermal dynamics, ensuring you are well prepared for the challenges ahead.

We don't just teach firefighters how to USE a thermal imager. We teach them how to THINK with it...

Learn the Basics and Build on Them

TIC Tips Fire Training LLC bridges the gap between fire behavior and thermal imaging. Our mission is to transform thermal imagers from tools firefighters carry into skills they can trust.

By combining these fireground experiences with the science of thermal imaging, we teach firefighters how to recognize changing fire conditions, interpret thermal images correctly, and make informed tactical decisions that enhance safety and improve operational effectiveness. Every program blends classroom instruction with realistic, hands-on demonstrations, ensuring students leave with knowledge and confidence they can immediately apply on the fireground.

Classes areplanned to your specific thermal imagers and department needs!

The Basics to Build On!

Fire behavior and thermal imaging together to help understand the WHYS. When firefighters understand the why's, the hows and whens make sense.

TIC Integration

Officer Training

In a Firehouse Magazine study, about 58% of the students had less than an hour of thermal imaging training in a year. If this was forcible entry, would we trust these firefighters to force a door in a stressful situation? Why is it okay to do this with thermal imagers?

Specific Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, students will:

Have basic knowledge of:

  • The parts of an imager.

  • Have a better understanding of how the thermal imager works.

  • Learn the terms related to thermal imaging.

  • Understand how to properly interpret the information the thermal imager provides.

  • Have the knowledge base to make informed, educated decisions based on thermal imager data.

Have the understanding and knowledge base to use the camera in the following situations:

o Search and rescue

o Go / No Go situations

o Ventilation

o Overhaul

o Scene size-up

o Motor vehicle accidents

o Electrical emergencies

o Mechanical problems

o Water Application

o Flow Path recognition.

o Hazardous Materials

o And other applications you may have never thought of

Athletes study the opposing team more than we study an enemy that can kill us. Besides fire school, fire chemistry is not taught until investigator classes. How can we expect to do our job effectively and safely if we do not understand the animal we are slaying?

Specific Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, students will:

Have basic knowledge of:

  • Fire dynamics and fire development

  • Heat transfer and its effects on the fire environment

  • Legacy versus modern fuels and furnishings

  • Modern building construction and its impact on fire behavior

  • Hostile fire events and the conditions that lead to them

  • Reading smoke and recognizing changing conditions

  • Flow path recognition and the impact of firefighter actions

  • Wind-driven fires and their hazards

  • Connecting visible fire conditions to tactical decision-making

Develop officer-level decision-making skills using advanced thermal intelligence in incident command and emergencies. I should name this "crew leader training," since a firefighter could be leading a crew during an emergency as well.

Specific Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, students will:

Have basic knowledge of:

All of the information provided, as well as extra size-up and decision-making tactical scenarios based on the information the thermal imager is giving them.

I review in this class first arrival decision making in my CLUES in 360 size up as well as incident commander decsions.
