Thermal Imaging: The Basics to Build On

Holding a thermal imaging camera does not automatically make a firefighter proficient in its use. Thermal imaging is only as valuable as the firefighter interpreting the image.

This interactive four-hour program bridges the gap between understanding thermal imaging technology and applying it effectively on the fireground. Students will learn the science behind thermal imaging, including how infrared energy is detected, how heat transfer influences thermal images, and the capabilities and limitations of firefighting thermal imaging cameras.

During three hours of interactive lecture, participants will explore emissivity, reflectivity, transmissivity, gain modes, thermal layering, flow path recognition, field of view, scanning techniques, thermal imager applications, and common misconceptions that can lead to poor tactical decisions. Students will learn to interpret what their camera is showing, recognize what it may not be showing, and understand how changing fire conditions influence thermal images.

The final hour transitions from the classroom to live burn box demonstrations and hands-on training props. Participants will observe fire behavior and thermal imaging in real time, including how heat moves, how different materials appear through a thermal imager, how thermal anomalies develop, and how fire conditions change throughout an incident.

Participants will use their department-issued thermal imaging cameras whenever possible, ensuring they gain practical experience with the equipment they rely on during emergency operations.

  • Apply thermal imaging during size-up, search, fire attack, ventilation, overhaul, rapid intervention, firefighter survival, and other emergency operations.

  • Build confidence using department-issued thermal imaging cameras.

  • Make safer and better-informed tactical decisions on the fireground.
