Fire Behavior and Thermal Imaging: The Perfect Pair

Workshop Lecture and Fire Demonstration

$500.00

Fire behavior tells the story. A thermal imager helps you read it. Together, they become one of the most powerful decision-making tools on the fireground.

Thermal imaging is only as valuable as the firefighter interpreting the image. Likewise, understanding fire behavior without the ability to visualize changing conditions leaves critical information unseen. This five-hour program bridges that gap by combining the science of modern fire behavior with the practical application of thermal imaging, allowing firefighters to make faster, safer, and more informed decisions on today's fireground.

During three hours of interactive lecture, students will develop a solid understanding of fire behavior and learn how thermal imaging enhances situational awareness when used by a knowledgeable firefighter. Rather than simply identifying hot and cold objects, participants will learn to interpret thermal images by understanding what the camera is showing, what it is not showing, and how changing fire conditions influence every thermal image.

The course explores heat transfer, thermal layering, convection, conduction, radiation, ventilation-limited fire behavior, flow paths, flashover indicators, emissivity, reflectivity, thermal anomalies, and the capabilities and limitations of firefighting thermal imagers. Students will also learn how to apply this knowledge to improve size-up, search, fire attack, ventilation, overhaul, rapid intervention, and overall fireground decision-making.

The final hour transitions from the classroom to live demonstrations using a burn box prop. Students will observe fire behavior as it develops while simultaneously viewing changing thermal signatures through a thermal imager, reinforcing classroom concepts with realistic, visual examples. These demonstrations connect theory to practice, allowing firefighters to see firsthand how fire behavior and thermal imaging work together to improve tactical decision-making.
